What is The Metaverse?
The ‘metaverse’ a development originating in the games industry is the common name for 3 dimensional rendering of graphics on a screen or via a headset and is part of Web 3.0 the evolution of the internet into a fully interactive fourth dimensional environment.
Instead of the familiar Web 2.0 ‘websites’ the metaverse is split into areas of ‘virtual land’ which host different types of activity or ‘building’. Movement between shops, offices, places of entertainment and education facilities is achieved through portals leading directly from one to another so there is no need for roads, vehicles or other transport or utilities infrastructure.
One of the key uses of metaverse technology outside gaming is for simulation of complex activities such as engineering, surgery, Formula 1 driving and military operations. Current developments focus on retail, education and business conferencing and networking as well as entertainment.
